ABOUT

STATEMENT

I am captivated by the rhythm of light filtering its way through trees in the forest, the tangled depths of a garden, spaces where the gestures and marks of nature run wild. I look for the moments of silence and reflection to be found whilst wandering in nature, even the smallest patch of it. There is a stillness in nature, in the secret wild places, that allows for a journey inward as well as through. In my practice, painting is a bridge between an inner narrative and the physical world.

The subject of my work occupies a liminal space, somewhere between a real and a metaphorical landscape. I am much influenced by myth and fairy tales. The passage through forest, brambles, cliffs, wilderness is a recurrent theme in fairy tales through which I filter my own relationship to landscape. It is a depiction of a journey both interior and exterior.

BIO

Lulu graduated in 1997 from Emily Carr University of Art & Design where she studied painting and ceramics. After art school, she lived in New Zealand working in film as a props designer and set painter. She moved on to London where she worked in publishing. Eventually returning to Montreal in 2005 to finish a BFA (hons) from Concordia University in graphic design and printmaking. She has had a successful career as Graphic Designer working in editorial design for over a decade and has recently returned to her painting practice full time.

Her paintings can be found in private collections both in Canada and Europe.

Lulu works from her studio in Montreal absorbing the quotidian landscape and filtering it through drawing and painting. She is an avid voyageur, always looking for new views of nature, in daily walkabouts as well as far flung travels. Obsessed with trees, her house is full of driftwood, branches, roots and an absurd number of plants.
